R. Strauss Oboe Concerto
Mozart Symphony No.40
Although Prokofiev is known as a modern composer, his short Symphony No.1 recalls an earlier era, and is more reminiscent of Haydn. Similarly, Strauss’s charming Oboe Concerto, written just after World War II, hearkens back to the classical works he studied as a youth.
Concluding this evening of classical masterpieces is one of Mozart’s most popular and well-known symphonies. With its famous melancholy opening theme, his Symphony No.40 hints at a deep disquiet beneath its trademark refinement.
